An article by Mary-Ann Russon for International Business Times reports that 5G researchers from the UK have achieved the fastest wireless network connection speed. This speed achievement (one terabyte per second) is exponentially faster than the current widely-used 4G technology.
The record-breaking effort was conducted at University of Surrey’s 5g Innovation Centre which is sponsored by a group of telecom partners including Huawei, Fujitsu, EE, Aircom, BT, Samsung, Telefonica, Vodafone, Aeroflexand Rhode & Schwarz, as well as BBC.
5G: The network speed of tomorrow
The main focus of the research, according to 5GIC was not gaining the fastest wireless speed but rather how the network infrastructure should be designed in order to keep up with the demand of users.
Currently, the 4G technology offers an average download speed of 15Mbps. With 5G, speeds of 10-50Gbps would be the average. The speed comparison can be like of a snail to a cheetah.
5G, also known as Tactile Internet is the next major phase in mobile telecommunications standards. It is predicted that by 2020, 5G technology will be widely available to meet the vastly increasing business and consumers demands.
